What is EPR in Germany?
If you're selling products into Germany — whether from within the EU or internationally — Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance isn’t optional. It’s a legal requirement.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Germany means you — as the seller or producer — are responsible for the take-back, recycling, and proper disposal of certain products and packaging that you place on the German market.
The aim? Reduce waste, improve recycling rates, and hold producers accountable for the environmental impact of their goods.
Who Needs to Comply?
You Must Comply If You Sell…
- 📦 Packaging (shipping boxes, wrapping, fillers)
- 🔌 Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
- 🔋 Batteries
Each category has its own registration, reporting, and fee obligations.
EPR for Packaging: LUCID Registration
If you send packaged goods to consumers in Germany, you must register with the LUCID Packaging Register under the Verpackungsgesetz (Packaging Act).
You must:
✅ Register at LUCID Register (Zentrale Stelle)
✅ Sign up with a dual system (e.g. Der Grüne Punkt, Interseroh) for collection/recycling
✅ Report annual packaging volumes
✅ Display your LUCID number on marketplace platforms like Amazon
Failure to do this? Your listings can be removed, and you may face fines up to €200,000.
⚡ WEEE (Electronics) and 🔋 Batteries
If you sell electronic products or batteries in Germany, you must register under the ElektroG and BattG regulations.
This includes:
- Registering with EAR Foundation (stiftung-ear.de)
- Labeling products with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol
- Appointing an Authorized Representative (if non-EU based)
- Taking part in recycling programs and reporting sales volumes
What About International Sellers?
If you’re selling from outside the EU (e.g., US, UK, India, China), you are still responsible for EPR compliance in Germany.
You must:
- Appoint an Authorized Representative (AR) for WEEE/Battery
- Register and report packaging through LUCID
- Comply before your first sale — marketplaces are enforcing this strictly
